RESPONSES OF ALGAE COMMUNITIES OF THE NORTHWESTERN BLACK SEA ON THE IMPACT OF LOCAL, REGIONAL AND GLOBAL FACTORS

The reactions of phytobenthos and phytoplankton communities of the Northwestern Black Sea to influence of factors of local, regional, and global levels in 2000−2011 years was estimated with the use of holistic approach and methods of morphofunctional ecology. The expert evaluation of power of influence of factors at each level was implemented on the basis of the estimation scale containing seven categories. The local level is characterized by the highest value of negative influence caused by intensive transformation of natural biotopes in a coastal zone. At the regional level there are credible processes of restoration of plant communities in response to the reduction of eutrophication. At the global level there is growth of climatic anomalies, which can substantially change speed of ecological processes and structural-functional organization of biotic component of Black Sea ecosystem.

ON THE TAXONOMY, REPRODUCTION, AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE DIATOM NITZSCHIA LONGISSIMA (BRÉB.) GRUNOW (BACILLARIOPHYTA)

By now, sufficient factual material relating to the diatom alga Nitzschia longissima has been accumulated in the literature. Obviously, all floristic data obtained with the use of information based on a broad understanding of the species will also be questionable. Under the name N. longissima several species are hidden. They belong to a heterogeneous complex longissimaclosteriumreversa. Based on the analysis of literature data, as well as on the study of type material and thirty-six clones, gathered on the Atlantic coast of France and in the Black Sea near Karadag, we proposed to apply to N. longissima a concept sensu stricto, whichmay eliminate many problems in the identification of this species.

PERIPHYTON BACILLARIOPHYTA OF THE HYPEREUTROPHIC ARTIFICIAL LAGOON AROUND VLADIVOSTOK (RUSSIAN COAST, SEA OF JAPAN)

Species composition and quantitative characteristics year-round research of periphyton diatoms on experimental plates in hypereutrophic artificial lagoon around Vladivostok are studied. Seventy-nine species and interspecific taxa by Bacillariophyceae (58), Fragilariophyceae (6) и Coscinodiscophyceae (15) classes are revealed. Total periphyton density was varied from 0,026 to 13,9 mln cells/m2, the indicators of powerfully organic water pollution α-mesosaprobionts has dominant status (80,03 %). The average annual values of number species, species diversity Shannon and evenness Pielou indexes in diatom periphyton were low (n = 9,5, H = 1,38, e = 0,39 inf. byt/m2, respectively). In the winter period and to beginning spring periphyton have not developed almost, it is caused by influence negatively light condition in this lagoon as results strong freezing-over was showed. The features of quantitative periphyton development in year-round become formed by specific of physical and hydrological lagoon conditions, as well as significant eutrophication ones by sewage waters, contributing the mass development power organic pollution indicators.

HAPTOPHYTES AND DINOPHYTES FROM OLIGOCENE BASINS OF THE NORTHERN PERI-THETYS

A study of nannofossils and dinocysts from different types of Oligocene basins of the Northern Peri-Thetys resulted in paleoecological reconstructions. The following phytoplankton associations were recognized: cold-water; littoral shallow-water relatively cold- and warm-water; lagoon; semi-isolated with endemics. Nannofossils were present in carbonaceous sediments, with more favorable conditions for them being in the Carpathian basin of Krosnensky type, in the earliest Rupelian of Germany and Southern Ukraine. Dinocysts were identified in all types of Oligocene basins. Correlation levels identified by nannofossils and dinocysts allowed us to substantiate the lower and upper Oligocene boundaries and degree of desalination in the Middle Rupelian.

NEW FOR BLACK SEA SPECIE CHAETOCEROS MINIMUS (Basillariophyta): NATURAL OBSERVATIONS AND EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCHES

New for Black Sea algae species – small cell diatomea Chaetoceros minimus (Levander) Marino, Giuffré, Montresor et Zingone was discovered in spring 2005 in northeastern shelf water with maximum abundance 1,6•105 cell/L. In this period specie was registered in experimental work of natural phytoplankton continuous culture. In the end of May 2006 Ch. minimus was discovered in the water of northeastern part of Black Sea (4,4•105 cell/L) in the period of intensive bloom of coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi (Lohm.) Hay et Mohl. In June 2011 this alien specie had intensive growth in the bath phytoplankton culture. By used experiments with nitrogen and phosphorus supply it was showed that the growth of Ch. minimus will be intensive in relatively high phosphorus concentration and low nitrogen concentration. Maximal specific growth rate of Ch. minimus is considerably exceeded this parameter of E. huxleyi and this alien specie has high capability to intrude in ecosystem and to be dominant specie in phytoplankton. The consequence of this introduction will be unpredictable.

DYNAMIC OF FUNCTIONAL EPIGENOTYPES DUNALIELLA VIRIDIS TEODOR. AT CUMULATIVE AND QUASICONTINUOUS CULTIVATION

The dynamics of Dunaliella viridis epigenotypes at cumulative and quasicontinuous cultivation was studied. It was found that the pattern of nucleic acids, proteins, triacylglycerides, β-carotene, which characterizes epigenotype depends on the conditions of cultivation of microalgae. Quasicontinuous cultivation of D. viridis can increase biomass yield by 23 % compared to the cumulative cultivation, with the specific productivity was 3 times less than the cumulative cultivation. It was found that the growth rate of the microalgae correlates with the accumulation exopolysaccharides in the culture medium.

TERRESTRIAL ALGAE FROM GRANITE OUTCROPS OF RIVER VALLEYS OF UKRAINE

The results of investigation of algae from granite outcrops of river valleys located in three climatic zones of Ukraine – Polesye (Teteriv River), Forest-Steppe (Ros River) and Steppe (Yuzhnyi Bug River) are presented. 179 algal species were found (8 new species for Ukrainian flora), among them green (mostly trebouxiophycean) and streptophyte algae are led. Green conjugating algae are distributed on outcrops of Polesye as well; cyanoprokaryotes and diatoms are numerous on outcrops of Forest-steppe zone; cyanoprokaryotes are characteristic for outcrops of Steppe zone. Dominant complex included common for all granite outcrops genera Elliptochloris Tscherm.-Woess, Apatococcus F. Brand emend. Geitler, Desmococcus F. Brand emend. Vischer, Klebsormidium P.C. Silva et al. etc. Specificity of dominant species of outcrops of Teteriv River (Polesye) are determined by Trentepohlia E. Martini and Mesotaenium Nägeli, Ros River (Steppe zone) – Chlorogloea Wille, Gloeocapsa Kütz., Prasiolopsis Vischer etc., Yuzhnyi Bug River (Forest-Steppe zone) – Trentepohlia, Chlorogloea, Dilabifilum Tscherm.-Woess, etc. Two ecological groups of algae – epilithic and chasmoendolithic, are presented on granite outcrops of all investigated outcrops: epiliths are occurred in shaded places and near the water, chasmoendoliths were found on dry lighted slopes, but sometimes occurred in shade also. Species composition and dominant complex of algae from granite outcrops depend on conditions of particular habitat as well as on climatic zone. Comparison of data about algae from granite outcrops with other stone substrates of Ukraine shows that species composition is relatively similar on substrates with close chemical peculiarities, but physical characters perhaps less influence on algae.

MORPHOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF DOMINATING SPECIES OF DIATOMS IN THE NORTH-EASTERN BLACK SEA

Influence of mineral nutrition element concentration upon the morphological structure (number of cells in the chain) and productional characteristics of leading complex of phytoplankton in the North-Eastern Black Sea in 2009-2012 was revealed. In the tests with nitrogen and phosphorus addition it was shown that increasing of the number of cells in the chain of Dactyliosolen fragilissimus (Bergon) Hasle and Sceletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve diatoms took place under a high concentration of both mineral nutrition elements. Growing of phosphorus concentration and small content of nitrogen resulted in increasing of cellular chain of Leptocylindrus danicus Cleve and Thalassionema nitzschioides Grunow. Addition of mineral nutrition elements has not influenced on the change of cellular chain of Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima (Hasle) Hasle diatom. Experiments have shown a close interconnection between cell quantity and cell number in the chain of Th. nitzschioides, D. fragilissimus and S. costatum. For L. danicus the correlation between these parameters was absent, and for P. pseudodelicatissima the correlation was very weak. Intensification of growth of diatom biomass was observed when nitrogen and phosphorus were added simultaneously.

STRUCTURE AND TAXONOMICAL DIVERSITY OF BENTHIC DIATOM AT ESTUARINES OF RIVERS BELBEK AND CHERNAYA (SOUTH-WEST CRIMEA, UKRAINE)

Comparative analysis in the structure and taxonomic diversity of benthic diatom (Bacillariophyta) from two estuarines of SW Crimea: River Chernaya (Inkerman is heavy polluted area of Sevastopol Bay) and River Belbek (rather unpolluted open shore) was carried out. At Belbek area 275 sp. and ssp. were found and 116 ones – at Inkerman; the total number of diatoms registered altogether is set to 303 sp. and ssp. Based on abundance calculation results and using cluster and MDS analysis, 2 groups of stations were distinguished. First group consisted of Inkerman stations (6), whereas second group of stations (10) corresponded to Belbek area. These results bear out that the certain diatom complex is formed within each of the estuarine area and characterized by well-defined taxonomic structure. Among 21 most dominant species (61 % of total abundance at Belbek and 92 % – at Inkerman), 4 species are typically freshwater forms and 1 is ubiquitous. The most common 16 species in each of the estuaries are typically marine and brackish-water forms consisted of about 47 % (in Belbek) and 79 % (in Inkerman) of total assemlage density. Based on the updated inventory of Black Sea benthic diatoms (1093 sp. and ssp.), the indices of taxonomical distinctness were calculated. These values are close to the expected mode, corresponding to structure of whole Black Sea benthic diatoms inventory (AvTD = 83.5; VarTD = 306). Phylogenetic structure of Inkerman diatom assemblage was characterized to enclose the greater share of mono- and oligo-species branches, in comparison with the larger part of poly-species branches, wide variability and unevenness structure of diatom community at Belbek.
