DIATOM EXOPOLYSACCHARIDES. A REVIEW

Diatom exopolysaccharides (EPS) are bioactive components released into the environment. As an important component of marine phytoplankton, diatoms produce up to a quarter of the annual primary organic matter. The results of EPS studies highlighting the important role of diatom EPS in the global carbon cycle are analyzed. The main types of extracellular carbohydrates, monosaccharide composition of EPS, and dependence of their production on algal growth rate, light conditions and nutrient contеnt in the environment are discussed.

THE COMBINED INFLUENCE OF LIGHT INTENSITY AND TEMPERATURE ON ORGANIC CARBON TO CHLOROPHYLL A RATIO IN THREE SPECIES OF MARINE BACILLARIOPHYTA

The combined effect of light and temperature on the change in the intracellular ratio of organic carbon to the chlorophyll a (C/chl. a) was studied in three species of diatoms: Phaeodactylum tricornutumBohlin, Nitzschia sp. 3 and Skeletonema costatum Cleve. At the optimum temperature of 20° C value of the C/chl. a ratio varies from 15 to 60–70 all over the studied light range in Ph. tricornutum and Nitzschia sp. 3, and up to 350 μE·m-2·s-1 in S. costatum. The dependence of this ratio on the light is described by hyperbolic curve. Temperature decrease results in increase both of the C/chl. a ratio in algal cells and increasing the initial tangent of the slope of the C/chl. a ratio curve. Inhibiting light combined with low temperature cause a decrease in the functional activity of algae, a decrease in the rate of synthesis of chl. a against the background of its enhanced photo-oxidation and, as a consequence, a sharp increase of the C/chl. a ratio. All studied diatom species are characterized by similar nature of light and temperature dependence of C/chl. a; however, in S. costatum the curve of C/chl. a ratio formed the plateau at lower light intensities while photo-oxidation of chlorophyll took place with an increase in luminance.

BIODEGRADATION ABILITY AND PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES OF CYANOBACTERIUM LEPTOLYNGBYA SP. ISC 25 UNDER NAPHTHALENE TREATMENT

Cyanobacteria (Cyanoprokaryota) have gained a lot of attention in recent years because of their potential applications in biotechnology. In this study the cyanobacterium Leptolyngbya sp. ISC 25 was identified as tolerating and effectively degrading naphthalene as a toxic compound in the environment. The cyanobacterium was treated with different concentra-tions of naphthalene. Physiological responses such as survival, Chlorophyll a content, photosynthesis rate and ammonium excretion were investigated in logarithmic phase of growth curve. The biodegradation ability of the cyanobacterium was measured by GC and GC/MS analysis. Results indicated that chlorophyll a concentration decreased with naphthalene increasing and was approximately zero in the presence of 1 % naphthalene, Phycobiliproteins content enhanced up to 0.2 % of naphthalene, but at higher concentra-tions decreased significantly. Photosynthesis rate and ammonium excretion decreased in all treatments. Results of GC analysis confirmed the degradation of naphthalene by Leptolyngbya sp. ISC 25 in comparison with control (without the cyanobacterium). The results of GC/MS analysis identified the products of naphthalene degradation by Leptolyngbya sp. ISC 25. Totally lower concentrations of naphthalene is not lethal for cyanobacterium Leptolyngbya sp. and this strain can biodegrade naphthalene to 2(4H)-benzofuranone-tetrahydro-trimethyl mainly.

CLASSIFICATION OF UNISERIAL STRIAE IN BACILLARIOPHY TA WITH BIPOLAR FRUSTULE

The striae are the main structural-functional units in the diatom frustule, however, their morphology is still insufficiently studied and poorly used in Bacillariophyta taxonomy. New criteria for the stria architecture analysis rely on the data from electron microscopy investigations. For the first time hierarchical classification of the striae diversity in the diatom bipolar frustules was proposed. It reflects species ontogeny and the influence of ecology in evolution of different striae. Striae types were determined according to areolae types and originally defined stria parameters. Morphology of areolae determines macroareolar, postmacroareolar, combined and polyareolar striae types which are considered as the consistent stages in evolution of the striae in bipolar frustule. Our concept on the derivation of prevail in Bacillariophyta polyareolar stria from the macroareolar stria through the intermediate stria types is supported by similar morphological stages and their consistency recorded in frustule ontogeny of the species from different systematic groups of Bacillariophyta with bipolar symmetry. Basal and interbasal stria types were defined in accordance with the stria location within a basal siliceous layer. Conical type of areola and polyareolar stria with conical areolae are described. Their distinction from poroid areolae and polyareolar stria with poroid areolae is discussed. Proportional, compact and distant kinds of striae are defined on the ratio between stria and interstria areas and their meaning in species biology and ecology is indicated. All the definitions of the frustule structural units are based on the concept of functional morphology of the diatom frustule suggested by the author.
