The Microalgae Culture Collection of the M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany, NAS of Ukraine (IBASU-A) was established in 1960. By order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No 650-р of 28.08.2013, the collection is included in the Register of Scientific Objects Constituting the National Heritage of Ukraine. Due to volume and unique composition IBASU-A belongs to world-class collections. Today the collection includes 500 strains – mostly representatives of Chlorophyta, as well as Cyanobacteria, Euglenophyta, Eustigmatophyta, Xanthophyta, and Charophyta. The funds of IBASU-A include 1250 units of preservation. Among them there are halophilic and freshwater algae, strains of rare and biotechnological species, authentic strains, mutants, and bacterial consorts of algae. The basis of the collection are the original strains (86%) isolated by Ukrainian specialists-phycologists from different types of water bodies in Ukraine (60%), Germany, Middle Asia, Israel, Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan and some countries of Africa, North and South America, Australia, etc. (26%). The rest of the strains were obtained by interexchange from other collections (CCAP, CALU, CСALA, HPDP, IBSS, LABIК) or from some scientists. IBASU-A collection is intended to preserve the biodiversity of microalgae and their biotechnologically valuable strains, as well as providing scientists with material for fundamental and applied scientific research, teachers of educational institutions – with methodological material. More information about the collection is presented in the book Microalgae of Culture Collection of IBASU-A of M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany NAS of Ukraine and in a number of publications, the main of which are listed below. The collection is registered in the Word Federation for Culture Collection with registration number WDCM1282.
