CAN LINUM UCRANICUM GROW IN THE SUBALPINE LEVEL OF THE CHORNOHORA RIDGE (UKRAINIAN CARPATHIANS)?

The authors draw attention to the problem of scientific responsibility when reporting new data about species distribution. Fallacy of the locality data (Svetlova, 2006, 2009) for Linum ucranicum (Griseb. ex Planch.) Czern. (Linaceae) in the Ukrainian Carpathians (Chornohora Ridge, Pozhizhevskaja Mt, snowfield trough) is evident. Special studies have revealed that growing of the species in the locality cited on the label is impossible. The counterarguments are as follows: presence on plant roots of some residues of carbonate rocks actually not existing in the assumed collection site; difference in pH values of the soil residues on the plant roots and of the soil collected directly on the specified site on Pozhyzhevska Mt.; detection among the Lucranicum shoots some fragments of other plants, Marrubium peregrinum L. and Centaurea stricta Waldst. et Kit., which are absent in the flora of the Carpathians; discrepancies in coenotical and ecological characteristics of this species and the data provided on the label.

GLAREOPHYTON AND BIOECOLOGICAL FEATURES OF OBLIGATE GLAREOPHYTES IN THE UPPER ZONE OF THE MOUNTAIN CRIMEA: A CASE STUDY OF LAMIUM GLABERRIMUM (LAMIACEAE)

Biomorphological characteristics of plants, previously interpreted as features adaptive to the conditions of crumble talus (such as spreaded rhizomes, powerful and deep main root system penetrating talus, etc.), in fact indicate quite different ecological conditions. Vegetation of a crumble slope is formed not stepwise in parallel with overgrowing talus and its stabilization, but simultaneously with the formation of this landscape. Using Lamium glaberrimum (K. Koch) Taliev as a case study, the key characteristics of obligate glareophytes have been determined: seed reproduction, short-distance dispersal of seeds, thermophily, mezophily, heliophily, ability of the hypocotile and shoots to lengthen in favourable periods and to overcome quickly the layer of detritus, shallow root system, overwintering of renewal organs in the detritus and a short life cycle. Biological peculiarities do not allow to include obligate glareophytes into syntaxa of petrophytic vegetation.

ANATOMICAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES OF LATERAL ROOT FORMATION IN SOME AMPHIBIOUS PLANTS

The study of the lateral root formation in adventitious roots in Butomus umbellatus L. and Sagittaria sagittifolia L. demonstrated that lateral root primordia (LRP) form from perіcycle cells. The LRP initiation took place in the apical meristem. The first morphological event related to the LRP initiation is the enlargement of initial pericycle cells. The LRP growth has a biphasic pattern. At the first phase, an active cell divisions and formation of future tissues of LR are observed. At the second phase, the LRP growth slows considerably. Mature LRPs reach the parental root surface at the distance of 6–8 cm from apex.

THERMOGENESIS IN PLANTS

Current state of the problem of heat production (thermogenesis) in plants is analyzed. Thermogenesis is an adaptive feature that facilitates cross-pollination in some species of Cycadaceae, Araceae, Annonaceae, Nymphaeaceae, Aristolochiaceae, Arecaceae and Cyclanthaceae, Magnoliaceae, Nelumbonaceae, Rafflesiaceae. The release of heat energy in the cells of thermogenic flowers or inflorescences is mainly due to the acceleration of mitochondrial respiration. According to current views, the basis of the molecular mechanism of thermogenesis is the dissipation of energy produced in the mitochondrial respiratory chain by means of alternative oxidase and mitochondrial uncoupling proteins.

ECOLOGICAL DIFFERENTIATION OF THE BIOTOPES OF KARABI-YAILA (CRIMEAN MOUNTAINS)

Biotope classification of Karabi-yaila based on syntaxonomy of vegetation cover was developed; ecological differentiation of the investigated biotopes was made. Biotopes amount to only 10 types and variants but have high variability due to changes in topography and karst processes. The synphytoindication of ecological factors, their correlation and correspondence with biotope types are presented. This was made with the help of direct and indirect (DCA-analysis) ordination, as well as environmental profiling methods. Thus, it is shown that the continental climate and humidity climate are related to the amount and distribution of rainfall and correlate with hydroregime and soil aeration, while thermal and cryoclimate have an effect on the chemical properties of soils.

PHYTOINDICATION ASSESSMENT OF SYNTAXA, CLASS MOLINIO-ARRHENATHERETEA, IN POLISSYA AND FOREST STEPPE ZONES OF UKRAINE

Analysis of 2096 relevés using techniques of synphytoindication (Didukh, 2011), with application of advanced mathematical methods and software, allowed us to establish the important environmental aspects of differentiation of meadow vegetation at the level of alliances and orders. Differentiation was caused mostly by changes in hydrological parameters of the soil, occupying more than 30% of the relevant scales. The nature of correlation between the twelwe leading edaphic, climatic and cenotic factors has been determined. Indicators of the climatic factors fluctuate within narrow limits; however, their isochore define the optimum zone of communities, located in the northern part of the Forest-Steppe zone, which extends from Ternopil to the Dnieper River. The original results have important scientific value for prediction of vegetation changes in relation to a variety of environmental factors.

ADAPTIVE STRATEGY OF IMPATIENS PARVIFLORA (BALSAMINACEAE) IN THE SECONDARY RANGE. I. PATTERNS OF POPULATION ORGANIZATION ALONG THE ENVIRONMENTAL GRADIENT

A morphometric analysis of the 20 local populations of Іmpatiens parviflora within its introduced range, combined with a comprehensive literature-based comparative analysis of the primary and the secondary ranges has proved to be an effective approach to identify key elements of the species’ adaptive strategy. A number of organization patterns of the alien species populations have been revealed. The main abiotic factors enabling the local spread of І. parviflora are relative light intensity under tree canopy and soil moisture. The species is characterized by high overall ecological and phenotypic plasticity, as well as by the high level of intrapopulation phenotypic variability. Among the 20 studied metric and allometric morphological traits, the most variable and plastic were those related to the species’ reproductive capacity. The biomass allocation pattern of I. parviflora is consistent with the optimal partitioning theory. Morphological differentiation of the individuals within the populations is highly pronounced when intraspecific competition is strong.

GENERA TRIGONELLA, MELILOTOIDES, AND CRIMEA (FABACEAE) IN THE FLORA OF UKRAINE

Results of a critical treatment of the genera Trigonella L., Melilotoides Heist. ex Fabr., and Crimea Vass. in the flora of Ukraine are reported. A system of Trigonella is revised. Taking into consideration the data of molecular studies, the fenugreeks with alfalfa flower type and linear fruits are separated in subgenus Medicagoidina. It has been suggested that in the genus Melilotoides, only sections of the annuals Lunatae Boiss., Samaroideae Boiss. and Pectinatae Boiss. with the alfalfa type flower and flat fruits should remain. Herbaceous polycarpics from sections Ellipticae Boiss. and Persistentes Grossh. of Trigonella with a simple-type flower with enlarged wings and fruits of various shapes, according to the authors, should be placed in one or several genera. The genus Crimea is retained in the article with the only one species, S. cretacea (M. Bieb.) Vass., a semishrub having one-seed fruits with thickened radial veins on the surface. A key for identification of the species is proposed. Synonymy, nomenclatural types, as well as information about ecological peculiarities and geographical distribution, are given for each of species.

TAXONOMIC ANALYSIS OF SOME SPECIES OF THE GENUS CRATAEGUS (ROSACEAE) FROM THE FLORA OF CRIMEA

Morphological characteristics of critical plant species of the genus Crataegus L. (C.pojarkovae Kossych, C. orientalis M. Bieb., C. taurica Pojark., C. stankovii Kossych) growing in the South-West Crimea were studied in detail. The following characters of living plants were analyzed: architectonics of plant crowns, color of bark and leaves, morphometric characteristics of the leaf blades, size and color of the fruits. Due to results of the analysis, as well as a lack of hybrid forms within common distribution areas, at present there is no sufficient reason to consider C. pojarkovae as a subspecies of C. orientalis and C. taurica as a synonym of Cmeyeri. Both these taxa should be treated as separate species of the genus Crataegus. The status of C. stankovii requires additional karyological studies.

MODERN STATUS OF POPULATIONS OF CARLINA ONOPORDIFOLIA (ASTERACEAE) IN WESTERN WOLHYNIA PODILLA

Modern state of population of rare species of Ukrainian flora Carlina onopordifolia Besser ex Szaf., Kulcz. et Pawł (Asteraceae) in Western Wolhynia Podilla are considered. Analysis of the age structure of Carlina onopordifolia populations in Western Wolhynia Podilla has shown qualitative differentiation depending on the modern state of natural habitats. Homeostatic populations with complete ontogenetic state prevail in antropogenically non-disturbed habitats in meadow steppes. Sylvicultures of Pinus sylvestris in steppe slopes cause degradation of Carlina onopordifolia population in Western Wolhynia Podilla. Recommendation for improvement of protection of Carlina onopordifolia in Western Podilla are proposed.

FUNCTIONAL MORPHOLOGY OF THE HORSESHOE SPOT IN THE FRUSTULE OF PLANOTHIDIUM SPECIES (BACILLARIOPHYTA)

Morphology of the horseshoe spot (HHS) with the cavity has been investigated in details in several species of Planothidium Round et Bukht. that carry out an attached mode of life. On the base of photomicrographs obtained with light and scanning electron microscopy, the model of the HSS longitudinal section was designed and light rays tracing through it has been implemented. It has been shown that HHS is an optical system that may diffuse or focus light, depending on the refractive index of the matter inside the cavity. For the first time HHS functions are revealed in a living diatom organism: diffusion of light over the chloroplast side turned to the substrate. The vertical part of inner convexity generates on the attached valve the heating arc that provides a diatom cell with additional heating energy. Thus, a new mechanism of light utilization was detected in the diatom species widely distributed in benthic ecosystems. A new term, lensoid, and terminology for its morphological description are proposed.

SYNTAXONOMY OF THE PHRAGMITO-MAGNO-CARICETEA CLASS IN UKRAINE

Using the newest methodical approaches, a syntaxonomical revision of the Phragmito-Magno-Caricetea Klika in Klika et Novak 1941 class has been conducted. It has been established that in Ukraine the class is represented by 56 associations belonging to 7 alliances and 4 orders. The ordination and phytoindication analyses have been performed. Placement of the syntaxa of a lower rank in the European classification system was established, and the names were more precisely defined according to the ICPN requirements. Principal factors of the ecological differentiation of the class communities have been identified. Ordination and phytoindication analyses of the Phragmito-Magno-Caricetea class communities have been made. It is defined that if there is no single determining factor for differentiation of the communities within the class, isolation of the middle rank syntaxa takes place by separate factors or by their total action. As a result of two-dimensional DCA-ordination, the principal factors for differentiation of the associations within the each order were identified. Fluctuation of water level and mineral nitrogen concentration in a substrate are the major factors for the Nasturtio-Glycerietalia syntaxa. Light regime of the ecotopes and content of calcium combinations in soil has an influence on the communities distribution within the Oenanthetalia aquaticae. For the order Phragmitetalia, the fluctuation of water level is important. The same factor together with the carbonates concentration in soil determine differentiation of syntaxa in the Magno-Caricetalia.

RARE XEROPHYTIC STEPPE COMMUNITIES AND BIOTOPES IN THE KRASNA RIVER VALLEY (LUGANSK REGION)

Rare plant communities related to the so-called Hyssopus assemblage (Hyssopus cretaceus, Artemisia hololeuca), «lowered alpine plants» (Carex pediformis, Carex humilis, Helianthemum canum), and community of the Pontic steppes (Stipa capillata, S. lessingiana, S. pennata) were revealed in the valley of the Krasna River. Communities of the «lowered alpine plants» have not been previously observed in this area. The ecocenotic amplitude of the habitats of rare species towards different ecological factors has been defined. These biotopes require different protection measures; tomilars should be recognized as a distinct category in the EUNIS, a pan-European classification.

THE GEOGRAPHIC STRUCTURE OF THE FLORA OF BILOOZERSKY NATIONAL NATURE PARK

Results of the geographic analysis of the flora of Biloozersky National Nature Park according to G. Meusel et al. (1965; 1992) demonstrated that in the latitudinal spectrum of chorological groups the temperate-submeridional species (26,4 %) prevail. This is typical for the flatland temperate-latitude floras of the Holarctic region. Species of the Eurasian group with European and circumpolar ranges, mostly distributed in the temperate and boreal zones, predominate in the spectrum of regional chorological groups. Cosmopolite species play a minor role in the studied flora. Estimated by oceanic-continental ratio, the species of Euryoceanic and indifferent groups prevail. In general, correlation between oceanic and continental climate types of ranges confirms the intermediate character of the flora of the Park. Thus, the proportion of the range groups in this flora reflects common structural characters of the forest-steppe of Central European floras.

ADAPTIVE STRATEGY OF IMPATIENS PARVIFLORA (BALSAMINACEAE) IN THE SECONDARY RANGE. II. VITALITY STRUCTURE OF POPULATIONS AND ONTOGENETIC STRATEGY OF THE SPECIES

A comprehensive population analysis on the environmental gradient proved to be a powerful tool for determining the key components of the adaptive strategy of I. parviflora, as well as for identifying ecological factors, which are determine the performance of the species’ populations in the secondary range. A gradient of deterioration of living conditions from close to natural Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus robur, Carpinus betulus forests to Pinus sylvestris forestry plantations has been observed for the studied species. At the same time, a negative impact of population density on vitality and morphological integrity of individuals has been revealed. Among the 20 studied populations, more than a half was rated as having the flourishing vitality type. This indicates on high ecological plasticity of the species, which have eventually led to a high level of naturalization in the introduced range. Indicative for I. parviflora is the shift between stress and protective components of the ontogenetic strategy. As a consequence of this ability, individuals possess a high level of morphological integrity, allowing populations to exist in stressful conditions.

PECULIARITIES OF THE MOSS SPORES GERMINATION UNDER CONDITIONS OF WATER STRESS DEPENDING ON pH AND TEMPERATURE

Viability of unicellular moss spores of Funaria hygrometrica, Pohlia nutans, Ceratodon purpureus, Tortula modica has been experimentally investigated in vitro. Germination of the moss spores depending on humidity, substrate acidity and air temperature has been used as the ability criterion to bear extreme conditions of the external environment. It has been established that on low water potential –2,5, –2,0 the spores of Funaria hygrometrica have died, but spores viability of the remaining species has been lowered to 5–20%. Depending on humidity and pH of the substrate, the spores of Ceratodon purpureus and Tortula modica germinated at very acidic pH 3,4 and high humidity –0,5 MPa. The spores of T. modica have been more perceptible to the conditions variability than those of Ceratodon purpureus in the process of water potential lowering and increase of the substrate acidity. Under the conditions of high humidity and temperature +39º C, spores viability has decreased much greater than at the temperature –2º C. Under the rising temperature and water deficit, the spores germination was suppressed, being weaker at the lower water potential. Thus, the interaction of ecological factors, the wide amplitude of humidity and substrate pH, and the spores heat resistivity are of decisive significance in the process of moss reproduction. Under the extreme conditions of substrate humidity, mosses are more resistant to high temperatures in dry localities than in the humid ones. Funaria hygrometrica prevail on humid substrates, while Ceratodon purpureus occurs on acidic soils more often than Tortula modica, and both species are resistant to drying and high temperatures.

A CONCEPT OF THE FLORA AND ITS ELEMENTARY UNIT

Defining the elementary unit of the flora concept is one of the scientific issues of biodiversity research, since analogous units in geobotany and plant taxonomy have been already defined long ago. The author proposes to distinguish that elementary unit on the basis of species groups with occurrence in a specific being not lower than the third class. A floristic complex, having quite distinct natural borders and ecological peculiarities, is an initial unit of the territorial organization of a flora. In its essence the flora, as well as any other component of biodiversity, is not a geographical but ecological phenomenon, territorial dimension of which is determined by common features of its species composition. This is a material hierarchic system formed by by floristic complexes of similar species composition as components of an elementary flora. Next levels of its hierarchic organization are defined on the basis of similarity of the generic spectrum, ecomorphs, biomorphs, and other indices. The article presents a considerably new understanding of the main elementary units in floristics: the floristic complex and elementary flora, which underline the floristic classification of floras, as opposed to the present-day understanding of an “elementary” flora as the lowest, elementary unit of landscape regionalization.

SYNTAXONOMY OF HALOPHYTIC VEGETATION OF THE SEASHORE PART OF THE KILIA DANUBE DELTA

Syntaxonomy of halophytic vegetation of the seashore part of the Kilia Danube Delta (Odesa Region) is presented. Vegetation of the studied area is represented by four associations belonging to three classes: Festuco-Puccinellietea, Thero-Salicornietea and Salicornietea fruticosae. A new association, Poo bulbosae-Artemisietum santonicae, is described with three subassociations. Communities of this association are formed on old fallows under considerable grazing impact, have some features similar to the wormwood desertified Black Sea steppes on salt soils and belong to the Festuco-Puccinellietea class. Subassociations typicum, artemisietosum austriacae, and camphorosmetosum monspeliacae differ by their floristic composition and ecological location. Damping shifts and salt soil regime are the determinant factors of ecological differentiation of subassociations. Communities of solonchaks located near the wetland periphery area and in local depressions are represented by associations Salicornio perennantis-Suaedetum salsae (Thero-Salicornietea class), Halimionetum verruciferae, and Salicornio prostratae-Halocnemetum strobilaceae (Salicornietea fruticosae class). Characteristics of the revealed syntaxa is provided. Phytoindication assessment of the habitat conditions was accomplished and principal factors of ecological differentiation (damping shift, salt regime, acidity, aeration and soil humidity) of the described syntaxa were identified.

EVOLUTIONARY-PALYNOMORPHOLOGYCAL ANALYSIS OF SOME TRIBES OF THE FAMILY PLANTAGINACEAE

Pollen morphology of 32 species belonging to 14 genera and five tribes of the family Plantaginaceae s.l. was studied using light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains of the studied species are mainly 3-colporate, rarely 3-colpate (some genera of tribes Gratioleae and Cheloneae). Representatives of tribes Gratioleae, Angelonieae, Cheloneae, Russelieae, and Antirrhineae generally exhibit similarities of their pollen grains in the aperture types, surface sculpture, form, shape, and size. The highest diversity of surface sculpture types is characteristic of pollen grains in representatives of tribe Gratioleae. Such diversity probably was formed in the early stages of evolution of the family Plantaginaceae. The ancestral type of apertures was evidently 3-colporate with indistinct ora, dominating in pollen grains of the studied tribes. Pollen grains in these groups represent both primitive and more advanced types of sculpture. Smooth, perforate and foveolate sculpture types can be considered as primitive, while striate-reticulate and macroreticulate sculpture is more advanced. Transitional sculpture types are perforate-rugulate-verrucate and reticulate-verrucate ones.

ANALYSIS OF THE FLORA OF NATIONAL NATURE PARK «PYRIATYNSKYВ»

This article highlights the taxonomic diversity and systematic structure of the flora of NNP «Pyriatynsky». It has been determined that its flora includes 1174 species of vascular plants belonging to 509 genera, 122 families, and 6 divisions. The flora is sufficiently representative for species diversity of the Left-Bank Dnipro area. The flora belongs to a transitional type between Boreo-temporal floras and Mediterranean ones. This claim was supported by distribution of higher-rank taxa, by analysis of the spectra of families and genera, as well as the results of cluster analysis of floras parsimony by Sørensen-Czekanowsky index, and by factor analysis for the parameters of the systematic structure. The spectra of families and genera of the spontaneous flora and its native fraction are similar, except minor differences in ranks of some taxa. The systematic structure of the alien fraction has a thermo-xerophilous character caused by dominant Mediterranean, North American, and East Asian elements. The specta of genera have a boreal character. This is a result of the flora development under floodplain conditions in the north of the Left-Bank Dnipro area. The differentiation of taxa within ecocenophytons and cenofloras bears a complex character. The maintenance of the high-level species diversity should be based on conservation and restoration of all natural floristic complexes, limitation of biological invasions, and development of the Uday River ecological corridor.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT OF THE STATE OF STEPPE PERENNIAL PLANT POPULATIONS IN UKRAINE AS EXEMPLIFIED BY IRIS PUMILA

For the model steppe perennial species of the Ukrainian flora, Iris pumila, the factors were studied that may indicate a threat of genetic erosion including the level of intraspecific differentiation, population parameters and spatial isolation, ecological amplitude of the species, anthropogenic influence, genetic diversity as assessed by ISSR-markers and chloroplast sequences. Low intraspecific differentiation of I. pumila on the territory of Ukraine, narrow ecological amplitude, isolation and small size of populations, significant habitat fragmentation, prevalence of generative individuals and poor generative reproduction, exposure to anthropogenic effects suggest potential threat to the species. At the same time, ISSR-analysis demonstrated the high level of genetic diversity of I. pumila along with low differentiation of geographically distant populations, while analysis of chloroplast sequences revealed three specific plastid haplotypes. These suggest that the species have still retained substantial genetic variability despite the deterioration of ecological and population indices. In general, our study clearly shows the need for an integrated approach to assess the risk of depletion of the species gene pool and its extinction.

SPONTANEOUS SPREAD OF ARISTOLOCHIA MACROPHYLLA (ARISTOLOCHIACEAE) IN KONCHA-ZASPA FORESTS, KYIV

A local population of the North American species, Aristolochia macrophylla Lam. (Aristolochiaceae), a strong-growing woody vine, was registered in the natural broadleaf forests for the first time in Ukraine. This ornamental plant was known only in culture after introduction in Ukraine in 1811. The observed spontaneous population of A. macrophylla is single, though migration of the alien woody vines (species of the genera Parthenocissus, Celastrus) in the forests of Ukraine are known to fill empty ecological niches. Spontaneous migration of woody vines in the broadleaf forests of Ukraine is regarded as a florogenesis trend threatening local biodiversity.

Morphological and cultural properties of A MedicinAL mushroom, PIPTOPORUS BETULINUS (BASIDIOMYCETES), ON NUTRIENT AGAR MEDIA

The article presents results of the research on growth and morphological peculiarities of a valuable medicinal mushroom, Piptoporus betulinus, from the Culture Collection of Mushrooms of М.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Using scanning electron microscopy, the micro-morphological structures specific to this species were studied in order to enable its identification in pure culture. Cultural-morphological studies were performed on four nutrient agar media. For all tested strains, potato-dextrose agar medium (PDA) and incubation temperature of 26º C were the most favorable for vegetative growth. Temperature of 36° C is critical. We have studied the presence of eight enzymes characterizing: redox processes (laccase, tyrosinase, peroxidase); metabolism of nitrogen compounds (protease), carbohydrates (amylase, cellulase, β-glucosidase) and lipids (lipase). The established cultural characteristics can be used for verification of P. betulinus cultures.

Cell cycle regulators in Arabidopsis thaliana (Brassicaceae) transgenic plants under clinorotation. Cyclin-depending kinases

The main cell cycle regulators in plants, as in all eukaryotes, are cyclin and cyclin-depending kinases (CDK). They form active complex to initiate a cascade of reactions during cell cycle progression. In this article the generalized data about classification, properties of these proteins and their role in cell cycle regulation in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana (L) Heynh. are presented. The following issues are emphasized: d-cyclins genes (from D-class of cyclins), very important for cell progression across presyntetic phase of the cell cycle, which are responsible for cell transition from quiescence stage in DNA-synthesis phase (S) and can be regulated by exogenic factors; and CDK2, which combines this class of cyclins to form an active CDK-cyclin complex. Each cyclin is synthesized and degrades in the cell for a specific period of the cycle and their expression fluctuates during the whole cell cycle [2], whereas CDKs is permanently present in the cell. Therefore, the study of CDK is necessary for understanding the fundamental cell cycle control mechanisms.

THE PHYLOGENETIC POSITION OF THE GENUS PAULOWNIA: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF PALYNOMORPHOLOGICAL EVIDENCE

It has been revealed that Paulownia is characterized by a distinctive combination of palynomorphological characters, which suggests its isolated phylogenetic position and difference from other members of related families, which is consistent with the molecular phylogenetic data that substantiate the recognition of the separate family Paulowniaceae. Original palynomorphological data and their comparison with published data indicated that pollen grains of Pawlownia are 3-colporate, oblate-spheroidal, sometimes spheroidal in shape, in polar view 3-lobed or rounded-triangular, in equatorial view circular; small-sized, sometimes to medium-sized, with reticulate exine sculpture. The generalized palynomorphological data on Paulownia are compared with the features of pollen grains in representatives of Bignoniaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Orobanchaceae, Plantaginaceae, and Phrymaceae.

VASCULAR PLANTS OF THE FLORA OF UKRAINE HIGHLY INVASIVE IN NORTH AMERICA: A TAXONOMIC ANALYSIS

High invasive potential in North America is peculiar to 84 species of vascular plants native to Ukraine, which are recognized as invasive at national and regional (states, provinces and territories) levels. The list of taxa has been analyzed from the viewpoints of their taxonomic position and modern phylogenetic placement. These species belong to 38 families and 66 genera. By the number of species, the following families prevail: Asteraceae (14 species, 16.7 %), Poaceae (9 / 10.7 %), Brassicaceae (6 / 7.1 %), Lamiaceae (4 / 4.8 %), Apiaceae (3 / 3.6 %). Best represented are the genera Carduus, Centaurea, Pilosella (3 species each), Acer, Galium, Euphorbia, Linaria, Lisymachia, Lythrum, Ranunculus, Rumex, Viburnum, Vincetoxicum (2 species each). Most species belong to the subclasses Asteridae (37 species of 12 families) and Rosidae (17 species of 10 families). These and other results of taxonomic analysis support the hypothesis on the prevalence of invasive species among species-rich, morphologically diverse and phylogenetically advanced families and genera.

NEW palynological characteristics of PidkRasylivskyi loess deposits OF THE UPPER PLEISTOCENE from the Volyn Upland

The results of the spore-pollen analysis of Pidkrasyliv loess deposits in the sections Korschyv and Boyanychy-III (Volynian Upland) are presented in the article. New palynological materials characterized the periglacial type of vegetation during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The composition of fossil palynofloras for the sections Boyanychy-III (102 taxa — three orders, 24 families, 20 genera, 55 species) and Korshyv (68 taxa — one order, 15 families, 13 genera, 39 species) was determined. The environmental analysis of species of Chenopodiaceae showed a significant role of xerohalophytes and halophytes in the structure of vegetation during the formation of Pidkrasyliv loess deposits (78 %— Korshyv and 50 % — Boyanychy-III). New palynological characteristics indicate that the Volynian Upland, as well as the entire territory of Volyn-Podolia, cannot be considered as a possible refugium of thermophilic and moister-loving tree species during the Last Glacial Maximum.

GENETIC VARIATION OF AGE GROUPS IN PINUS SYLVESTRIS VAR. CRETACEA (PINACEAE) POPULATION IN THE «KREIDOVA FLORA» PROTECTED AREA

Using 19 isozyme loci, we investigated genetic variation of three different age groups (under 30, 60, and 100 years) within Pinus sylvestris var. cretacea Kalenicz. population in the «Kreidova Flora» protected area. Young (up to 30 years) plants were found to have the lowest mean number of alleles and levels of the observed and expected heterozygosities compared to those of medium age and old trees. In general, the level of genetic variation of P. sylvestris var. cretacea population in the «Kreidova Flora» is somewhat lower (HO=0.187 and HE=0.200) than that of the population in the «Svyati Hory» Nature Reserve which is also located in the north of Donetsk Region.
